R.I.P. Mac Pro

Apple quietly pulled the Mac Pro from its product offerings last month. With little fanfare, the company removed it from its website, along with any mention on other pages.

This doesn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone following Apple’s product cycle. While they’ve released across-the-board upgrades and updates to their laptop line and several of their desktop models, the Mac Pro was left largely untouched since 2023 while still sporting a relatively hefty $6999 price.

While Apple offers three desktop models, the iMac, the Mac mini, and the Mac Studio, the Studio is very clearly meant to fill in the vacuum for a “pro” desktop. Given that the Studio can boast the M3 Ultra chip, a 32-core CPU, 80-core GPU, and 16TB of SSD storage, Apple isn’t exactly leaving its power users in the cold.

Overall, given its high price point and lack of recent updates, the discontinuation of the Mac Pro line of computers seems like more of a mercy killing than anything. Without greater attention and focus on bringing it up to speed with their other offerings, and with a comparable desktop alternative, the Mac Pro’s final days in Apple’s product lineup seemed more of an oddity than a justifiable expense.
