Google Workspace Deploys Ransomware Detection and File Restoration for Google Drive

Google announced recently that it was moving its ransomware and file restoration functionality out of beta testing and into widespread use for Workspace users. Since being developed in beta, the company has integrated a deeper AI model capable of detecting, by their own estimation, fourteen times more ransomware types and variants.

The two primary new features are:

  • Ransomware detection for Google Drive: If ransomware is detected on a computer, Workspace users with Google Drive installed as a desktop application will automatically have file syncing paused and will be notified. This would ideally stop a ransomware program from propagating across multiple systems and networks and contain the compromise to a single device.

  • File restoration: Workspace users can now roll back their files in Drive prior to a ransomware event, mitigating potential damage.

Both ransomware detection and Drive file restoration will be enabled by default for users within Workspace organizations, but can be toggled by administrators.

While file restoration is available to all Workspace customers, individual subscribers, and personal Google accounts, ransomware detection is limited to Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Standard and Plus, Education Standard and Plus, and Frontline Standard and Plus customers.
