Western Digital's Supply of New Hard Drives Has Dried Up for 2026
Consumers and businesses of all sizes are bracing for impact after Western Digital announced that its hard drive production capacity has sold out for 2026. The news comes in the wake of the AI-boom, which has driven record demand for hardware needed to operate data centers.
While the news was great for shareholders (Western Digital’s stock jumped by over 60% in the wake of the announcement), it’s likely to create a ripple effect for tech users in general, who are likely to face higher prices and lower supply for their storage solutions. This means businesses and end users alike will expect supply chain problems and sticker shock when purchasing new devices and services or replacing existing hardware.
This is by no means unprecedented: Demand for AI-driven hardware led to a massive jump in prices for RAM in 2025. The cryptocurrency boom drove a similar increase in GPU prices and demand for GPUs capable of processing blockchain transactions.
Aside from increased prices in the short term, the larger question is whether hardware manufacturers will abandon the consumer market entirely; part of Western Digital’s announcement also noted that the market accounted for only 5% of its business in 2026.
